BIOTECHNOLOGY RESEARCH AND DEVELOPMENT
These courses are offered exclusively to students in the Academy of Science, Research and Medicine and are designed to introduce students to the fundamental scientific principles of biotechnology, bioethics and the variety of careers available in biosciences. The Essentials of Biotechnology course emphasizes how key concepts from biology, chemistry, and physics apply to modern applications within the biological sciences. The knowledge and skills gained in this course provide students with a broad understanding of biotechnology and the impact it makes on society.
The next course, Applications of Biotechnology will focus on additional applications and techniques in biotechnology that expand and increase the student’s comprehension of how biotechnology utilizes living systems to create products and enhance lives. In addition, laboratory applications learned in this course form the pivotal component distinguishing science theory from application in bioscience, like that of engineering and mathematics.
Lastly, students will have the opportunity to conduct their own biotechnology research. Biotechnology Independent Research is an advanced series of courses designed for juniors and seniors. With topics ranging from biofuels to pharmacogenomics to nanotechnology, students are truly conducting cutting-edge research. Each year, magnet students present their research findings at the Georgia Science and Engineering Fair, the International Science and Engineering Fair, and the BioGENEius National Challenge.
